statistical Packages for Data Analysis

Data is currently the ‘new oil’ or a very hot commodity, and understanding the patterns and trends of data is now one of the focal areas of giant corporations. There are several data analytics tools, and choosing the right one may be challenging for new users. SPSS, which stands for Statistical Package for Social Sciences, is a beginner-friendly and user-friendly computer application for entering, analysing and visualising categorical and numerical data. It helps filter and model data into useful information.

Prerequisites

Participants should have knowledge of basic statistical concepts and should have experience in computer operations using MS Windows. Experience with SPSS is not necessary, although a basic understanding of the purpose and functions of the software is helpful.

Course description

The course requires a basic knowledge of computer and learners are assumed they have basic know-how of computer at high school level. In addition, it requires the knowledge of mathematiclal statistics and Econometrics courses as a prerequisite.  It is emphasis on introducing different statistical packages ( Stata, and SPSS (python soon). It gives importance for the application of these programs to analyze data.  The course improves the skills and the knowledge of learners to solve real problems  using actual  data.

What you’ll learn

  • Data entry, data importing and preparation
  • Summarizing data using descriptive statistics
  • Exploring relationships between different types of variables
  • Choosing appropriate charts and developing them
  • Transforming variables and managing the data to suit your analyses
  • Choosing the appropriate inferential tests such as chi-square, t-tests and regression and running them
  • How to interpret all the statistics presented in the course
